We started volunteering for MABTR in 2024. We volunteer as foster parents. We adopted a Boston years ago from MABTR and always enjoyed his quirks. We lost him about 4 years ago. I love fostering because it’s wonderful to see the transformation that takes place from the puppy mill survivors.
Having never believed in having a dog to make money got us into rescue. Animals are meant to be family members.
The greatest challenge working with an animal rescue is trying not to get attached to them. I tell myself that we are the next stepping stone to this pup getting a better and richer life.
We LOVE seeing the transformation that takes place from when we first get the pup to the end of the first week. It’s amazing in how just that first week, you can see them start to relax and realize they are safe.
The most challenging part about volunteering for MABTR might just be the adoption interviews. I always over think it. I have asked for help on more than one occasion. It’s definitely a hard process when you have to pick between two perfect adopters but at the end of the day it is finding the perfect fit for a lifetime.
If someone is considering volunteering, I would tell them to start out as babysitter or do transports. You only have them for a little while and that in itself can sometimes help a person decide if they want to become fosters or become more involved in other rescue efforts.
