If someone is thinking about volunteering, we would say that It’s so worth the effort.Â
My wife, Lacy, and I have been volunteering since 2012, for thirteen years. We love animals, especially dogs, doubly so for Boston terriers. Lacey learned of MABTR and just signed us up.Â
What keeps us around is seeing the impact we’re able to have on the lives of these innocent little guys.
We are foster parents and dogsitters for MABTR. We got involved with MABTR when Lacey had a Boston terrier when she was back in college and fell in love with the breed. Years later, when she bought her first house, she wanted to get another one and started searching around. During that time, she discovered MABTR, and while the dog we ended up getting wasn’t from the rescue group, we started fostering shortly after adopting that dog. Our next dog, Alfred Pennyworth, was a foster-fail from the group, and my best bud since we adopted him.
The greatest challenge is the fact that there are always more and more animals to save, and we want to save them all, but time and other resources prevent it. Getting to know the dogs, and seeing them develop from a scared puppy-mill rescue or something similar into a happy/confident dog, either with us or their furever home is a huge motivation.
Our favorite part about volunteering for MABTR is getting to know all the wonderful dogs and finding a perfect home for them.
The most challenging part about volunteering for MABTR is saying goodbye after we’ve bonded with a foster. It’s always bittersweet, because we know we’ve selected a good home for them and that they’ll be happy, but we’ll also miss them.Â
We’re always grateful to have shared part of our time on this planet with each dog though. Lacey and I feel so fortunate to have met so many wonderful dogs and watched them go from scared to confident and playful. It warms the heart every time.
