Gus' Condition

Gus (DOB 11/25/2023) came to MABTR on 1/25/2024 at the age of 8 weeks as a release from a breeder in MN who diagnosed him with a heart murmur.  The heart murmur was confirmed by a veterinarian and required further diagnosis through an ECHO.

Diagnosis: Gus received a diagnosis of Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA), which is a common congenital heart defect in dogs. Before birth, the Ductus Arteriosus plays a crucial role in diverting blood from the Pulmonary Artery to the Aorta since the lungs are not yet functional. After birth, the Ductus Arteriosus should naturally close to ensure that all blood from the right side of the heart passes through the lungs before returning to the heart. If left untreated, this condition can lead to heart failure, jeopardizing Gus's chances of reaching his first birthday.

POSITIVE NEWS – a surgical procedure can correct the PDA and enable Gus to enjoy a long and joyful life. This procedure has a high success rate and the doctors will be able to go through the groin instead of performing open heart surgery.
