Missouri’s Department of Agriculture Attorney General announced Operation Bark Alert - a crack down on breeders in Missouri.  This crackdown puts a heavy demand on shelters and rescues.  Dogs that are rescued are at risk of being euthanized due to limited resources once removed from the breeder.  Action is needed now to complete the rescue of these breeder dogs and help find their forever homes.  If you are a rescuer, groomer, veterinarian, boarding facility, transport volunteer, and dog lover continue reading. Your help is needed!!!!

MidAmerica Boston Terrier Rescue (MABTR) is working towards building relationships to help rescue the dogs that are seized from substandard breeders.  Sadly, Missouri has many substandard breeders. Many rural counties harbor hundreds of captive dogs suffering lifelong misery and neglect.

Often the breeding parents live in filthy conditions, receiving little or no medical care. Frequently their offspring do not even live up to good breeding standards.  These breeder/puppy mill operations’ negligence passes on genetic tendencies like hip dysplasia, eye problems, heart arrhythmia and other health issues, and even behavior problems to future generations of puppies.  Often, the breeding adults receive no housebreaking or socialization with human beings or other dogs.  These dogs are in desperate need of being rescued and rehabilitated after they are seized.  (adapted from http://www.franklincountyhumanesociety.org/main.asp?id=27  )

MABTR is making a “CALL TO ACTION” to support the Department of Agriculture and the breeder dogs that are rescued from substandard breeders.  MABTR wants to establish an emergency network of resources in and around the State of Missouri ready to assist in these crackdowns.  We are building a support system that quickly can respond to assist in transitioning puppy mill dogs into loving family pets.  The following help is desperately needed to provide a safety net for the breeder dogs whose time is up:

·         RESCUES:  This is the most critical need.  We need Rescue organizations to work with us and agree to take one, two or many of the seized dogs into your rescue per month, per quarter, semi-annually or annually.  We ask for this assistance even if you are at capacity.  Please have emergency foster homes ready to either accept these foster dogs on emergency basis or accept an additional dog on emergency basis.  We do not expect every Rescue to accept dogs on every seizure.  We would like you to commit to taking one or two breeder dogs seized or released to the Department of Agriculture per set time interval.  This allows proper planning for maximum use of resources available.  Interested in helping as a rescue organization please email Jeanne with your group name, a contact name, phone, email, city/state, and website.

Groups must have a current Animal Care Facility Missouri License.

·         Foster Homes:  This is a critical need.  Every rescue group is in desperate need of more foster homes.  These emergency foster homes will be shared across rescue organizations.  Efforts will be made to match the foster family with a compatible breed.   Interested in helping as a foster organization please email Jeanne with your name, phone, email, city/state, and breed(s) of choice.

·         Veterinarians:  We need to have several vets across Missouri ready to provide their services free or at a steeply discounted rate.  Interested in providing veterinarian services please email Jeanne with your name, phone, address and email.

·         Kennels/Boarding: When there are no foster homes available for the vetted dogs, we would like to have a place available to hold the dogs until a foster home is available.  We would like the Kennel to start the socialization process.  This is a short term arrangement.  Interested in providing room and board please email Jeanne with your name, phone, address and email.

·         Donations:  To make this all happen, MABTR desperately needs financial assistance, canine services and products to provide the needed care to our rescued Breeder dogs.  MABTR is a 501c3.  All donations are tax deductible.

We also need crates and towels/blankets are in high demand.  Want to donate email Jeanne with a description of the item(s), city/state, and contact information

·Volunteers:  We need volunteers to help with transportation, temporarily holding a dog or products and other possible aspects of emergency rescue.  We envision that we will have crates ready and waiting across Missouri.  These crates will contain dog food, a leash, a harness, treats, shampoo and a toy if possible.  The foster parent is doing a great service in opening their homes to these dogs as they transition from breeder dog to family dog.  The crates and supplies will help the foster offset the expenses associated with fostering and socializing a dog. Interested in volunteering your time please email Jeanne with your name, phone, city/state, and email.

Finally we want to create a communication network using an email discussion list to quickly get the word out about our emergency rescue needs.  This discussion list will be the emergency communication tool to allow MABTR to quickly announce when emergency help is needed, what type of help is needed and allow the members of this discussion list to respond to MABTR via the email discussion list with what service or product they can offer to assist in the emergency rescue efforts.  Belonging to this discussion list does not commit you to anything.  It only allows you the opportunity to see what emergency help is required to rescue breeder dogs in dire need.
